An unhealthy state of affairs…
Posted on 24.08.2010 by Adam Robinson
On 15 September 2010 the Ukrainian Government will announce its annual state budgets and it is widely expected that greater emphasis will be placed on healthcare reform; following the influenza pandemic in 2009 and the generally poor state of the country’s healthcare system which has changed little since Soviet times. In the last few years healthcare expenditure has grown exponentially yet still falls far behind European standards with access to medicine only available to a select few. Public awareness, education and communication are of critical importance in supporting the effective prevention of illnesses – such as HIV/AIDs and tuberculosis – rather than addressing the more costly treatment and cure.
The unfair and inadequate budget resources distribution, non-transparent public procurement and overburdened registration procedures prevent quality medical drugs and equipment from reaching Ukrainian patients. This disables international pharmaceutical companies to pursue fair competitive practices and to establish stable and trustworthy relations with the state healthcare authorities both centrally and regionally. This has an immediate business impact, but, more importantly, a negative influence on the access of Ukrainian patients to the up-to-date medicine and, consequently, on the general public health.
Against this backdrop, global pharmaceutical companies have an immense challenge to develop their businesses in Ukraine and forge effective alliances with Government, state authorities and the medical community. Built upon our solid experience in this field, we have developed a bespoke Ukrainian Communications Guide designed to provide healthcare companies with the ideas, approaches, pitfalls to avoid, tools and components for delivering effective healthcare communications campaigns in Ukraine.
