UN Foundation Documentary
Posted 02.10.2010
In the UK, Grayling co-ordinated an exclusive screening of the new United Nations documentary in the House of Commons, inviting influential delegates from relevant backgrounds to attend. A media campaign was also developed to run alongside the screening. In the US, Grayling held a similar screening at National Geographic.
Challenge
Since 2002 the Global Fund has approved more than $19.5 billion in spending to combat AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria – three diseases which claim millions of lives every year.
On 4th October 2010, the Global Fund to Fight Against AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis will face a crucial financial replenishment pledge from member countries at the UN Headquarters in New York.
This commitment will enable existing programmes to be funded at current levels through 2013 but also allows countries to significantly scale up new programmes, promoting more rapid progress toward the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
Solution
The United Nations Foundation created a unique documentary about the work of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the Global Fund). The documentary, entitled ‘A New Picture of Health’ can be viewed here:http://vimeo.com/15166083
Narrated by Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, the film chronicles how investments from European donors in health are empowering communities and putting an end to diseases of poverty.
Results
In the UK, more than 50 delegates attended the screening, with support from Andrew Mitchell, Secretary of State for International Development, who hosted the event.
A panel of experts also discussed the screening which included the Director-General of International Planned Parenthood Federation, Dr. Gill Greer and Chief Executive of World Vision, Justin Byworth. The panel was fronted by Richard Horton, Editor of the Lancet.
In the US, there were more than 150 attendees. The expert panel consisted of Ambassador Eric Goosby, United States Global AIDS Co-ordinator, Timothy E. Wirth, President of United Nations Foundation and Natasha Bilimoria, President of the Friends of the Global Fight. A special performance was given by Big Kenny, Country Artist and Philanthropist.
